Today I read The Fall of the House of Usher by Edgar Allen Poe. This story is extremely short, though technically a book, as so fulfills the spot as my 'Book read in one day'.
Normally Poe is not one of my favorite authors. He is a lover of words games and metaphors, this story being just one example. Still, Poe should get credit where credit is due for being the father of the detective novel. This being said,
The Fall of the House of Usher is neither a detective novel or my favorite book...ever. I read this story for my speculative fiction class as an example of Gothic literature. Gothic literature is filled with the creepy, dark and uncertain (such as phantasmagoria or insanity) and this is definitely true in this story on every count. If you want a quick run down of the story without the older style of writing and concrete details ad nauseam,
click here. Other wise, just read it. It takes less than an hour and while neither Poe nor this tale will every be my favorites, they're both interesting stories and worth the time to read.
