A book that scares you

When I first read "A book that scares you" on the list, my mind immediately jumped to horror. I haven't read too much horror before, so that seemed interesting... Then I realized that probably wasn't the point. Being interested, I mean. The challenge isn't to read a scary book, it's too read a book that scares you.

Generally, "scary" books don't scare me. I'm usually more amused than frightened. How is a girl leaving her home alone and unarmed after midnight to investigate strange sound after everyone around has mysteriously vanished or been murdered frightening? We all know what's going to happen! If she's that stupid, she deserves the cliché fate.

What I find much more frightening is reading a book that I think will be interesting and losing interest due to external factors. One of the biggest problems with reading so much in college is that previously fascinating subjects can become bland due to overexposure.

Therefore, for this challenge, I am reading Freakonomics. It's been on my shelf for a while after I picked it up for a buck at some estate sale. Since I'm taking my first ECON course this semester, my concern is that reading it will feel too much like bland, obligatory course readings, that it will cease to be enjoyable.

Well, I guess there's no way to know until I read it, right? See you on the other side!
