Aliens and Religion: A Unique Combination
I know this doesn't quite relate with our
2015 challenge, but I thought I'd share an interesting book I'm reading for
class with y'all. It's called Religions
and Extraterrestrial Life: How Will We Deal With It? The cover has a picture of an
obnoxious green martian(?) touching a human hand, so I think I looked like a
nutter reading it at the airport, but that's beside the point.
Even though it's a bit of an odd book and
totally beyond the realm of books I usually pursue reading, it's quite
interesting! The first 74 pages deal with strict science: what types of planets
exist, where they are, how we know this, what scientists currently hypothesize
about extra solar planets. After that, though, the rest of the book's 209 pages
deal with various religions, from Anglicanism to the Bahá'í Faith
(which I had never actually learned about before), Judaism to Mormonism, David
Weintraub, the book's author and my ASTR 102 professor, delves into the
religious implications of extraterrestrial life and what theologians currently
predict in regards to their existence. Do you think aliens exist? Let me know!
